Fun Couples Activities

By: Alex DeWoskin, LCSW

If you are looking for some fun couples activities, there are several different options to choose from. Creating something as a couple can give you both appreciation for the other by observing the way the task is handled – as a team.

We’ve written about the importance of doing things with a partner in previous posts as a way of helping to increase intimacy. We know from the research that couples who do creative things together usually find their level of relationship satisfaction rises.

Here are five fun crafts to do together, giving you a sentimental decoration to place in your home, reminding you both of the love you share for each other.

What’s great about these fun couples activities is they really don’t cost that much money to do! Many of the items required to make what you see below likely can be found in your garage or in a closet.

1) Photo Collage

Spend an afternoon looking through old photos together. This time will allow you to reminisce about good times you had shared in the past. Pick out some of your favorite pictures of you partner and have them do the same for you. Purchase a large picture frame from a craft store.

Consider using one with a unique shape, such as in a heart or constructing the word “love”.

Place your pictures on the cardboard backing included with the frame, arranging them so portions of each photo overlap another without covering the subject in the picture. When you have finished, you have a great piece to hang on your wall to remind you of your love for each other.

2) Aromatic Candles

Making candles can be a fun project to do as a couple. The materials you will need are found in any craft store, and you can try making different scent combinations to enjoy when you burn them in your home.

To make a candle, wax in whatever color you select is melted in a double-boiler on your kitchen stove. Have your partner choose a few favorite scents to add to the wax and have them add it to the pot while you stir it continuously.

Have your partner hold the form in place while you pour the liquid contents inside. With two people working on this project, candles can be made quickly and easily. Light a few to enjoy a candlelit dinner or place a few around the bathtub to enjoy some quiet relaxation time together.

3) Fingerprint Heart Jewelry

Make jewelry that has both of your fingerprints pressed into clay, then hardened to keep the impression. Make a mixture of two cups of flour with one cup of salt. Add cold water a few tablespoons at a time and mix with your hands until the consistency is that of Play Dough.

This can be fun to do with your partner! Take turns adding the water and getting your hands dirty together until your clay feels pliable. Mold the clay into heart shapes. Use a small cookie-cutter or make them by hand. You could also make them in other shapes if you want to create a pendant, or a key chain. Use your imagination!

Take turns pressing your fingerprints into the clay to make impressions. Put the clay on a baking sheet and put in the oven for two hours at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the pieces to cool and then paint. Drill a hole in each piece using an electric drill.

Slip metal loops through the holes so you can use the clay pieces as jewelry. The fingerprints together have meaning that will be remembered every time you slip your hand in your pocket to grab your keys or when you adjust your necklace.

4) Traveling Photo Map

Purchase a large map that you will be using to hang on your wall when the project is completed. Glue foam board to the back of the map. You may need a few pieces so the entire map is covered, depending on the size you are using. This will help keep your map from rolling up. Spend time with your partner looking through pictures of the two of you that were taken in different states. Trace each state you visited as a couple on a plastic sheet protector using a marker.

Slide pictures you want to place on your map inside the corresponding sheet protector. Line up your photo underneath the outline and cut using scissors. You will be left with a photo of yourselves in the shape of the state where the photo was taken. Glue a few push-pins to the back of each photo using a glue gun. Push the photo in place over the state.

The push-pins will allow the photo to pop out from the map. This is great way to commit to doing some more travel with each other in the future, adding a new photo with each state you visit.

5) Date Night Jar

Paint wide craft sticks in four different colors. Sit with your partner to construct a list of activities you enjoy doing together. Split these into lists of activities done in the home that cost money and activities that are free. Do the same with activities you do outside the home. Write down activities that cost money and those that are free.

Pick a color for each of the four lists and write the activity on the stick. Place them in a jar. Tie a pretty ribbon around the jar. When you want to have date night, decide if you want to stay home or go out and how much money you have to spend. Reach in and pick a colored stick for this category. This takes indecisiveness out of date night!
