Romantic Date Ideas

By: Dr. John D. Moore

There’s just something romantic about the beach. Maybe it’s the soft touch of the ocean breeze, gently blowing upon your face. Perhaps it’s the crash of the waves that therapeutically wash away built up stress. There’s the soft cool sand that envelopes your bare feet … and warmly massages your soul. And what about the seagulls in the distance that playfully caw as they hover above.

Ahhh…

Let’s face it – the beach is one of the most romantic places on earth. You know it’s true! The beach is a place for lovers.

If you are looking for the ultimate dating idea, I encourage you to think about heading to the beach. The great thing about this kind of date is that it requires very little money and has the potential for creating a memory that you and your date will remember for a lifetime.

What follows are 5 tips for a romantic date on the beach. These tips contain several elements of mindfulness – a 25cent term used to describe an awareness of the moment. While some of these may seem corny, it doesn’t hurt to give them all a try.

Are you ready to create a romantic date on the beach? Let’s jump right in!

i love you

1. Go at sunset

Beaches are always beautiful but if you want to amp up the romance factor on your date, head out just before sunset. If you are unsure of what time the sun will set at your beach location, do a quick Google Search and type in “Sunset” with the name of the biggest town near your location. It should come right up.

Plan your beach date an hour or so before that yellow ball in the sky is scheduled to disappear. It might be helpful to check weather conditions and dress accordingly. Depending upon the time of year, it could be very warm outside or very cold.

2. Pack a picnic basket

As part of your planning process, make sure you think about food. This doesn’t have to be fancy. You can make some sandwiches with cold cuts and throw in some crackers. The truth is that just about anything tastes better on the beach. For something cold to drink, consider 2 small bottled waters or if the spirit moves you, a small chardonnay.

If you opt for wine, don’t forget to include cups – you don’t need to bring glassware. Toss a blanket, some napkins and your smartphone into that basket and you are done. More on the smartphone later in bonus tips!

3. Walk along the water

When you are your date head out to the beach, don’t be afraid to take your shoes off. The idea is for the both of you to mindfully join the aquatic environment that is all around you. Feeling the cool waters touching upon your feet helps with the experience.

For this tip – leave the tennis shoes at home and opt for sandals or other beach appropriate footwear.

4. Hold hands

If you want to magnify the romance factor on your beach date, I encourage you to grab your partner’s hand. If you have ever seen a couple walking along the shoreline hand in hand together, you know how powerful this experience can be! It doesn’t matter if this is your first date or if this is your fifteenth either. Beach protocol requires that couples join hands at some point and simply “be” with one another.

You don’t have to wait your for date to take the lead on this one – you can do it all on your own.

5. Find a place to chill

Chances are that you and your date will have worked up an appetite during that sunset stroll. When the moment is right, find a place to chill. Some ideas include an open patch of land under a palm tree or anyplace that offers a picturesque view.

Unpack the contents in your basket starting with the blanket. The rest will come organically for both of you. No need for a walk-through here.

Bonus Tips

Remember that smartphone I mentioned earlier? A nice touch during your beach date is to snap a few photos of you and mate along the way. Take turns and don’t be afraid to get a bit creative during the process.

If you see another couple strolling on the beach, ask them to take a picture of the both of you for memories sake. Oh – that smartphone might also be used to play romantic music when you are eating (hint!) Here’s a good tune from Coldplay called, Yellow.

One last tip – brush up on your kissing skills! Here is the deal – a beach kiss is amazing! It might have something to do with the saltwater and sand – who knows! One things is for sure – a kiss on the beach is a memory that will be cherished by the both of you forever.

Final Thoughts

If you are in a cold weather city like Chicago, it is highly probable that you will need to travel in order to get to the beach. That’s OK! Some things in life are well worth the waiting for. Plus, the extra time you will have to prepare will give you the opportunity to make sure everything is perfect.
