First Date Ideas Chicago

You’ve finally asked that special someone out on a first date, and the person said, “yes.” Great! Only problem is that you’re low on funds but still want to make that first date memorable. All is not lost. The truth is that all been there before. The good news is that you can have a terrific first date without spending a ton of money.

Here are five great places to consider for a first date in Chicago for under $25. Are you ready? Let’s jump right in!

1. Bowling Alleys

Think that bowling alleys are just for redneck slobs who want to get away from their nagging wives for a night and get drunk with their buddies? Think again. More and more bowling alleys are catering to a younger, more professional clientele.

Bowling alleys are the perfect place for the relaxed atmosphere you want on a first date. You can be silly or competitive during your games – whatever feels right with your date. During one first date at a bowling alley, think of throwing a gutter ball your first time up. That totally can break the ice and make you look humble!

Bowling can get expensive if you bowl more than a couple games and hit the snack bar. Visit the websites for the lanes in your area and look for coupons or special events that feature unlimited bowling for a discounted price. One fun place in Chicago is Waveland Bowl on Western Avenue. Be sure to check out their prices and hours.

2. Zoos and Aquariums

The local zoo or aquarium is an ideal place to go on a first date, especially if your date is an animal lover. Usually admission is free or fairly inexpensive.

If you’re having trouble getting the conversation started, ask your date what his or her favorite animal is. Then go find it and ask what’s so special about it. Do they have an animal spirit? That should break the ice and open up other avenues of conversation.

Zoos and aquariums are usually daytime trips, which is ideal. Use this bit of information to your advantage! If all was going well, you can ask your date if they want to grab dinner after the animal excursion. Lincoln Park Zoo should be top on your list because it’s free and open 365 days a year. Donations, however, are appreciated.

3. Drive-in Theaters

Not every town has a drive-in theater, but take advantage of it if your town does. Generally drive-in’s charge by the car and not by the person. That makes a drive-in move a lot cheaper than a movie at the multiplex.

Drive-in theaters have other advantages too. No one is going to search your car for hidden snacks. Getting caught with contraband was an embarrassment I never wanted on a first date.

At a drive-in, you can talk as much as you want without getting shushed. If romance blooms and things get physical, you don’t have to worry about prying eyes. Well, those steamed up windows might give you away, but at least no one can see what you and your date are doing. There are only a handful of drive-in theaters in the Chicago area so be sure to check out options.

4. Coffee Shops

This might seem like a boring place for a first date, but you’d be surprised what a great first date you can have at a coffee shop. Coffee and dessert at most coffee shops will cost you less than $25. The laid back atmosphere of a coffee shop usually creates a nice dynamic in which to get to know someone better.

A quick coffee before heading out to someplace more formal, like a restaurant, can help to warm both of you up and lighten the atmosphere. It can also help take off the pressure – something normal that everyone feels on a first date. One of the best things about a coffee shop meeting is that the both of you have the option to jet away if you do not feel it is a match! This is a real advantage for first dates.

5. Lakefront and City Parks

Don’t forget one of the least expensive places for a first date – the great outdoors! Whether you’re active people or not, there are plenty of things you can do outside with a first date (weather permitting!)

Some ideas include going shopping at the grocery store or outdoor market for picnic items and then heading to your favorite park to enjoy. Very romantic – and easy on the wallet!

If you’re active, plan a long walk. Be sure you pick an easy destination that won’t take you too far away from your starting point. There are several excellent places outdoors to check out in Chicago, including the lakefront! There are also plenty of parks that many people do not know about.

Mother Nature makes a gorgeous back drop to your first date. Nothing’s more romantic than sharing your first kiss during a beautiful sunset. And if the weather is nasty, you can always make out elsewhere!
